More Information

Founded in December 2009, The Memorials is a project spearheaded by Bay Area drumming prodigy, Thomas Pridgen. After a few years as drummer for The Mars Volta, Thomas turned his attention to forming his own group, which would incorporate a range of styles as diverse as the experiences of the band's members. Instead of becoming another rock band's heartbeat, the focus became collaborating with proficient musicians whom Thomas felt would help him fill a void he has seen in rock music throughout his entire life. Thomas quickly got in touch with friends and former students at the esteemed Berklee College of Music, Viveca Hawkins (vocals), and Nick Brewer (guitars), and asked them to join him in his newest endeavor. Thomas' decision to record with his friends, yielded a family vibe that enabled a comfortable yet intense recording process. The group's assets were secured after a few additions, as Thomas drew on bass, organs, synthesizers, and multiple percussive elements to help round out the sound.

The passion and intensity of the recording sessions is audible on The Memorials' debut effort, as they combine a vast array of sounds. Nick's sprawling guitars and Thomas' thick drums serve as the core of the sound, while Viveca's voice brings it together perfectly, with the support of additional instrumentation. This music is intelligent and calculated, exhibiting certain pop sensibilities within the scope of songs that rock out. The compositions exhibit each musician's incredible talent, while creating textured tracks that feel like vignettes of a band finding their stride.
